A former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, has warned potential troublemakers to stay away from Delta State during the 2019 general elections, expressing confidence that incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will lead all the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to victory in Delta State. Chief Ibori gave the warning on Friday as he joined other leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party to launch Okowa’s re-election campaign at Oghara, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking to the gathering of his party faithful at the event, Chief Ibori said, “Please, in the name of God, don’t come to Delta State to cause trouble; this is democracy, you tell the people what you will do, sell your programmes to the people. Anybody that is planning anything that is bad for our state, God will not allow it.” It was no exactly clear whether Ibori was speaking indirectly to the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, who has made it very clear that the APC is determined to win Delta State for President Muhammadu Buhari and ensure that its governorship candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, also wins in the state.
Continuing amidst thunderous applause from the crowed at Oghara Township Stadium, the former governor said, “The re-election of Governor Okowa is our challenge; I have no question in my mind that you (Governor Okowa) has done very well, I can say that without equivocation, you have done exceedingly well.”
Chief Ibori stated that Governor Okowa is “competent, capable, knowledgeable and have the capacity to govern the state for another four years; you (Governor Okowa) deserve another term, I am indeed very pleased with you, your achievements.”
“In your first tenure, you launched your campaign in Oghara and today, you are here to launch your campaign, it means you know your history and as the head of this political family, I declare and decree that you have all it takes to lead this battle, for all the candidates of our party to win in the election, God will continue to guide you, you have humbled yourself, God will uplift you,” Mr Ibori added.
The former governor noted that the peace of the state was very paramount and as such, Governor Okowa should be allowed to complete a second term in office in line with the rotation of power that exists in the state.
Meanwhile, reacting to Okowa’s re-election campaign flag-off, a leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, Chief John ‘Osimi’ Enakireru, yesterday said, “What the PDP did in Oghara is simply to launch their campaign. It is a normal path of our democratic process. We thank God for them that it was hitch-free. We they realise that one good turn deserves another. We hope this time they will not attempt to disrupt Chief Great Ogboru’s electioneering campaigns. There is no way we will accept that from them this time. Nobody should be so desperate to act in bad faith. This is a plea and a warning.
“All responsible and discerning politicians know that this time Chief Ogboru will win and win comprehensively. We want that victory to be peaceful but we are very ready for PDP this time. They will not even try to intimidate us this time and we will not allow them to rig elections again. That era is gone for good,” Enakireru added.
